Documents to Bring for Motor Vehicle and Boat Applications

In order to ensure a quick titling process please be sure to include the following documents for your Motor Vehicle and Boat applications:

  • A Motor Vehicle and Boat titling application filled out and SIGNED on the second page of the application. The link to the Motor Vehicle and Boat Title Application can be found here.
  • Be sure to indicate the way the names are to be joined (either "and" or "or") on the title application and the title or MSO or Title Reassignment Form (if applicable). If you pick “and” all owners must sign every document.
  • Please let us know via note or letter whether you have plates to transfer or need new plates and whether or not you have a lien holder and a day time phone number to reach you at with any questions we may have.
  • FEES ARE CALCULATED AT THE TIME A TITLE PROCESSOR HAS RECEIVED YOUR PAPERWORK, THE AMOUNT ON LINE 13 OF YOUR TITLE APPLICATION DOES NOT INCLUDE REGISTRATION
  • If you are putting a vehicle in a trust: Bring trust paperwork but accompany title paperwork.

What to bring down when purchase vehicle or Transfer from state to state

  • Driver’s license/ID - SD
  • Out of state driver’s license/ID: license and SS card or W2 (need whole number)
  • Title
  • Purchase agreement, bill of sale
  • Weight slip (trailers, campers, motorhomes) - if out state title
    • Dry, empty, unladen, weight ticket
      • Nothing with a G in front of the lbs
  • Payment
    • Check
      • The Minnehaha County Treasurer’s Office will not accept checks without an embossed name and address pre-printed in the upper left-hand corner. Due to the increase of Non-Sufficient Fund Checks, we will only accept pre-printed, in state checks.
      • No checks with a mail forwarding address under your name
    • Money order, cashier’s check
    • Cash
    • Credit card

SERVICE FEE OF 2.35% OF TOTAL

Title held by lender (bank) on Vehicle:

  • Lien holder’s fax number
  • Call us back or come down with fax number and vehicle information
  • Will fax to lien holder and call you when the title comes into our office to finish up title transfer

Selling a Car:

  • Sign in seller area on left hand side
  • Bill of sale/ area on back of title (sale date and amount paid)
  • Odometer
  • Print a seller’s permit - FREE
    • Come into the office or go online to my605Drive to print it off under YOUR account.
    • We are unable to do them over the phone
