The Minnehaha County Regional Juvenile Detention Center has a 40 bed capacity, three educational classrooms with computers and a library, a gymnasium, recreation yard, day room/dining area, kitchen and laundry facilities, visitation rooms, nurse's office, courtroom and maintenance and administrative areas.
The JDC employs 36 full-time employees and approximately 15 part-time staff members and contracts for nursing and food services. The Sioux Falls School District supplies teachers and educational assistants to provide educational services. Students attend classes from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, during the school year. During the evening hours, summer and on weekends, youth attend various programming and recreational activities. Each youth is assigned a Caseworker, who monitors the child's case, provides crisis intervention, and serves as the point of contact between the child, parents, court system and other individuals, agencies and service providers. If a parent/guardian has a question regarding their child, please call the JDC (367-4313) or schedule an appointment with the Caseworker.
The Minnehaha County Regional Juvenile Detention Center also provides a Community Supervision Program that serves as a pre-disposition alternative placement to secure detention for Minnehaha County and Lincoln County youth. The goals of Community Supervision are to ensure the youth appears in Court as scheduled and has no further criminal activity while their Court process is completed. Community Supervision offers youth the opportunity to remain in the home in their community while awaiting the completion of the court process in order to foster a more successful reentry into society. Our Officers provide supervision to youth while in the community. The Circuit Court Judge, considering all recommendations, will make the final determination regarding the youth’s placement in the Community Supervision Program.
